![]() Carbonization takes place under incredible heat and pressure. Under the right conditions, peat transforms into coal through a process called carbonization. Peat itself can be burned for fuel, and is a major source of heat energy in countries such as Scotland, Ireland, and Russia. Peat bogs store massive amounts of carbon many meters underground. These areas of buried plant matter are called peat bogs. Due to this, the plant matter decomposed at a very slow rate and retained most of its carbon (source of energy). Mud and acidic water prevented the plant matter from coming into contact with oxygen. As the plant debris sifted deeper under Earth’s surface, it encountered increased temperatures and higher pressure. ![]() Over time, the plants (mostly mosses) and algae were buried and compressed under the weight of overlying mud and vegetation. The seas occasionally flooded the forested areas, trapping plants and algae at the bottom of a swampy wetland. During this time, Earth was covered in wide, shallow seas and dense forests. The conditions that would eventually create coal began to develop about 300 million years ago, during the Carboniferous period. Because coal takes millions of years to develop and there is a limited amount of it, it is a nonrenewable resource. Fossil fuels are formed from the remains of ancient organisms. Coal is the largest source of energy for generating electricity in the world, and the most abundant fossil fuel in the United States. It is composed mostly of carbon and hydrocarbons, which contain energy that can be released through combustion (burning). Coal is a black or brownish-black sedimentary rock that can be burned for fuel and used to generate electricity. ![]() ![]() ![]() Thank you to anyone for the help! Me as well. In addition, enthusiasts have created emulators to mimic arcade hardware and allow even more arcade games to function on the home computer, the most famous of which is probably MAME. PC games based on arcade games remain enduringly popular. As can be seen, the history of arcade and personal computer games is not one of competition so much as borrowing and co-evolution. Nonetheless, there were some late arcade game hits, such as Street Fighter (1987) and Mortal Kombat (1992) and their sequels, and two similar beat-em-up games based on Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1989) and The Simpsons (1991). The increasing sophistication of home systems, as well as their convenience, began to outstrip the advantages of the video arcade. As computers and consoles became more popular, the video arcade faded. As the console industry went into a temporary but dramatic decline in the mid-1980s, the use of computers to play games, including arcade games, rose. ![]() Naturally, then, arcade games soon found themselves ported onto these as well. ![]() At the same time, the personal computer became increasingly popular as a platform for gaming. The Atari 2600 version of Space Invaders (1980) was the first example of an officially licensed arcade game and led to a major boom in the console's sales. With the birth of the Atari 2600 and the Nintendo Entertainment System, the availability of arcade games at home increased. It was not a computer game but required its own console. A home version of Pong was released in 1974. It was not long before gaming companies began offering their arcade games for sale to those who wanted to play privately. As all this was happening, the home video game market also began to take shape. Cheese's (founded 1978) and Dave & Buster's (founded 1982) sprang up to cater to different age groups within the video game market, while also offering other forms of entertainment. Video arcades, with a vast array of different arcade games offered in one place, began to appear, and businesses such as Chuck E. Most featured relatively simple, but also fun and addictive, gameplay Donkey Kong was more complicated and featured cutscenes that advanced the plot. Many iconic games were released in this period, including Space Invaders (1978), Galaxian (1979), Pac-Man and Centipede (1980), and Galaga and Donkey Kong (1981). The late 1970s and early 1980s were a golden age for arcade games. Other companies quickly copied Pong, and the video game industry as we know it today was born. Although extremely simple-just an electronic version of ping-pong, originally designed as a training exercise-Pong became wildly popular with the American public. Computer Space's creators later went on to found Atari, which, in 1972, changed the world of gaming forever with the release of Pong. Spacewar! was also the inspiration for the first widely released video arcade game, Computer Space. It remained a popular attraction at Stanford for the rest of the decade. Galaxy Game first appeared at the student union of Stanford University in 1971. ![]() Galaxy Game was a coin-operated version of Spacewar!, a game first written in the early 1960s. ![]() Somewhat ironically, considering how often arcade games would be translated to PCs, the first coin-operated video game was based on an early computer game. As advances were made in the field of electronics, they were incorporated into pinball games, which were facing competition from a new, similar form of entertainment: the arcade video game. The earliest pinball machines debuted during the 1930s. One ancestor of the modern video game was the pinball machine, which itself descended from earlier tabletop games involving balls, such as bagatelle. The History of Arcade GamesĮven before the invention of video games, coin-operated games were nothing new. The term PC arcade game refers to games that have similar play types as arcade games but are designed to run on a personal computer. Numerous arcade games throughout recent history have proven popular enough to cross over into other, more private platforms. Learn About Arcade Games What are Arcade Games?Īrcade games are coin-operated video games, usually found in public places such as video arcades, restaurants, bars, and theaters. ![]() ![]() ![]() It's opulent, grotesque, and it was insane even before the sands poured in. The point isn't that Dubai is beautiful, because it isn't, really, when you get down to it. ![]() Games love to explore ruined beauty now that there are engines that are so gifted with rebar and rubble, but Spec Ops is something else entirely. ![]() Grenades can kick up little clouds of dust allowing you to manufacture bursts of temporary - and highly chaotic - cover. You're inching forwards through narrow trenches, and then you look up and see the spiral arms of a department store's walkways interlocking overhead. As with BioShock, the setting for Spec Ops consistently elevates the action: you're flanking a turret, but you're doing it on the hundredth floor of a ruined skyscraper, with rowing machines and a fancy bar poking out from beneath the sandbags and ammo crates. Walker's the first one in afterwards and he discovers that the city has become a weird, crumbling battlefield: a shifting maze filled with wild men and charred corpses.ĭubai's a place where anything could happen, and although the Gears-style shooting gallery can be a little relentless at times, anything often does. Recently, strange radio signals have started crackling out from the centre of this extravagant, battered metropolis. His hero, Colonel John Konrad, was meant to be leading an evacuation, but the storms got worse and he hasn't been heard of for months. Walker's the head of a three-man team, and he's been sent to explore Dubai after it's been swallowed by the desert in a series of freak sandstorms. You're all set for a matinee hero and you don't expect a lead with a little more substance to him. You're so used to his breezy, knockabout presence that you're gently wrong-footed as his character slowly comes into focus. North's in everything these days, of course, but that ubiquity actually works in Spec Ops' favour. The Marlowe stand-in is Captain Martin Walker: Nolan North with a wrinkle in his brow and the past playing on his mind. Graffiti was a smart plot device in Left 4 Dead - here, there's just too much of it. Hopefully the writing's on the wall for writing on the wall in games. Far Cry 2 was a sandbox and Spec Ops is a corridor: it's a cover-based blaster in which you clear rooms of enemies, cast weapons aside to pick up new ones, and occasionally sit back to watch a set-piece unfold. This isn't the first shooter to draw from Joseph Conrad's novel Heart of Darkness, of course, but compare it to Ubisoft's attempt in the brilliant, uncompromising and frequently infuriating Far Cry 2 and you won't find too many elements in common. Spec Ops: The Line is a game divided, and that isn't a criticism at all. Yager's latest is trying to have it both ways, perhaps - Gears-flavoured stop-and-pop action one minute, The horror, the horror, the next - but the end result is interesting in its internal conflicts, and bold in its willingness to embrace its own confusion. Look again, though, and you'll see the setting's quietly fantastical, and the two-man squad under your command seem unusually tense - worn down, twitchy, even a little shell-shocked. ![]() At first glance, Spec Ops: The Line looks like so many other military shooters, built of sand dunes and dusty fatigues and filled with the flash and sparkle of a thousand rifles glinting in the sun. So much of it comes down to a question of influences: Conrad, not Clancy BioShock, not Call of Duty. ![]() |
